I. Case

Case of this Rolex Daytona is made out of Rolex’s signature oystersteel. It is a 904L steel that is chosen for best resistance against corrosion. Sized at 40mm, this case is highly polished all-around with water resistance up to 10 Bars.

II. Back

As per majority of Rolex watches, this Daytona of Rolex lacks any markings in the back. It has a clean brushed metal back that helps with the durability and water resistance of this watch.

III. Dial, Bezel, and Crown

Dial used on this model is the classic black dial with chromalight indexes. 12 o’clock chromalight index is replaced with the Rolex crown logo while hour and minute hands are also equipped with chromalight. In side the main dial are 3 smaller sub-dials. Starting from the bottom dial is the small seconds of this watch with red Daytona written on the top (hand that looks like a second hand is the chronograph hand). Left and right dials are the 12 hour counter dial and the 30 minute counter dial for the chronograph function of this watch. Outside is the cerachrom ceramic bezel that has tachymetric scale engraved on it, used to measure the average speed of racing cars. Crown of this Daytona is also made out of the oystersteel and has Rolex crown and 3 markings to represent triple-lock waterproof system. Lastly, button at the top is to start/stop and button at the bottom is to reset the chronograph function of this watch. One interesting thing about these buttons is that they can be screwed down to prevent water from entering the watch.

IV. Bracelet

Bracelet on Daytona is the Oyster bracelet with conventional three-piece links. Oysterlock clasp with easylink enables the owners to easily extend 5mm to suit their wrist. Overall, it is functional bracelet that does its job.

V. Movement

Movement used in this watch is the Rolex’s own Calibre 4130. This is an automatic movement that deals with chronograph functionality in Rolex. As per typical Rolex, calibre 4130 is able to obtain “Superlative Chronometer” title having +-2 sec/day. Also, this is able to last approximately 72 hours when fully wound. Overall, this is Rolex’s more iconic movement as it is the only movement that is able to handle chronograph function in Rolex.

VI. Conclusion and Pricing

First introduced for professional racing drivers, Daytona became a icon watch of Rolex. In fact, this watch is given to the winner of the “24 Hours of Daytona” race. Priced at 12,400USD, some might think it is expensive compare to other full steel Rolex watches. However, the cost comes from the chronograph, or cosmograph as Rolex calls it, complication. Chronograph is basically a stopwatch, but it takes an immense amount of engineering to build an automatic chronograph timepiece. In summary, Daytona is a one of a kind Rolex watch with deep history and sporty look to it.
