Words from Audemars Piguet:
“The Royal Oak Offshore collection has defied established conventions since 1993, giving an ever more sporty, masculine and powerful take on the iconic Royal Oak and its aesthetic codes” (AudemarsPiguet.com).
Limited to 500 pieces, this Royal Oak Offshore model is made from solid 18k pink gold. As the Offshore collection has been established to bring more sporty and masculine feel and look to it, entire piece is rather sizable.
Coming in at 44mm case size and 14.43mm case thickness, it is a hefty watch on the wrist. Majority of the case has brushed finish that is adorned by polished edges. In the end, the sheer size and thickness of the case brings the masculine aesthetic codes that AP desired.
As a AP designed this Offshore model around the concept of summer, this summer edition has an open back design that I personally believe goes well with the concept.
In fact, even with the open-back design, its water resistance up to 10 bars of pressure ensures this watch to be safe even when worn underwater.
III. Dial, Bezel, and Crown
Dial of this model has the famous “mega tapisserie” patterned dial that adds iconic look to it. Moreover, the silver-toned dial with hints of blue accents screams summer with its bright color combination.
Similar to the 18k pink gold casing, Offshore has a thick 18k pink gold bezel that looks rather crude from its size. However, considering the direction that AP was aiming for, the thick bezel that is held on by hexagon screws does add masculine characteristics to this time piece.
Beside from the 44mm case size, the iconic 18k pink gold push-pieces that protrudes out and surrounds the crown adds bulk to this watch. With that said, the chunky chronograph buttons and hexagon shaped crown suits well with the entirety of the piece.
Again, going with the concept of summer, white rubber strap is placed on to the 18k pink gold pin buckle. Bright white color adds a cool look during hot summer season, and the rubber strap allows better compatibility under water compare to leather and metal bracelets.
Movement used on this model is the Calibre 3126/3840 of AP. It is an automatic chornograph movement of AP that has a power reserve of 50 hours. Consisted of 365 parts and 59 jewels, this movement has a bidirectional monobloc rotor in 22k gold.
VI. Conclusion and Pricing
Priced at 47,500USD, it is one of the most summer watch of existence. Considering the chronograph functionality, gold casing, and the value that AP branding brings, it is a nice watch to be worn during summer. However, as offshore deviates away from the more classic and elegant Royal Oak collection, it is up to individuals to cherish Offshore or not.
